Use of Talc in Cosmetics faces imminent ban in EU

The European Chemicals Agency’s (ECHA) Committee for Risk Assessment (RAC) has classified talc as a Category 1B Carcinogen, Mutagen, or Reproductive toxin (CMR).

You can find the relevant details in the RAC minutes linked here. It is anticipated that the industry will not submit an exemption request under Article 15 of the EU Cosmetic Products Regulation, which means talc is likely to be banned as an ingredient in cosmetics in the EU around Q2 2027. Please note that this date is an estimate.

Meanwhile, the UK's Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is currently evaluating talc under the GB CLP regulations, so further updates on its status in the UK are expected in the future.
